Transferable Skills Seminar - Drug Development in the Pharmaceutical Industry: The Career Path, Landscape and Future

 

This transferable skills seminar is targeted international researchers (DC, PD and MC).

Seminar will be conducted in English.

■ Outline

The landscape of drug development in the pharmaceutical industry changes in a short timeframe. Once the seeds show promising potential in the venture company or startup companies, these seeds will be bought by large pharmaceutical companies which have abundant resources to run clinical trials. Running clinical trials is extremely expensive and the average cost exceeds billion dollars. Therefore, any pharmaceutical companies make efforts to minimize the cost, maximize efficiencies toward early approval of the drug. Many animal studies and pharmacology studies are often outsourced to the contract research organizations (CROs) and academic institutions. Depending on the expertise, the career path crosses between the sponsor and CROs. It is important for your career planning to understand the structure and functions of the matrix team of the pharmaceutical companies and identify where your strength contributes most.

■　Lecturer

Tomoko Maeda-Chubachi, MD, PhD, MBA, Founder and Chief Mentor, The Institute of Drug Development Career Promotion; Vice President, Medical, Novan, Inc.

Tomoko Maeda-Chubachi, MD, PhD, MBA graduated from Osaka University, and completed MD (1991) and PhD (1996) programs. She trained in the postdoctoral fellowship programs in Boston University (1995-1997), US, and University of Alberta (2000-2002), Canada. She was a board-certified dermatologist. She entered the pharmaceutical industry in 2002, starting from Pfizer Japan as a Japan Development Team Leader, and moved to the US (2006) as a Clinical Lead in the ophthalmology and dermatology therapeutic areas. She was a Senior Medical Advisor and Senior Medical Director at Eli Lily and Company (2011) and at GSK (2014), respectively, to lead global clinical development projects for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pemphigus, and androgenic alopecia and negotiated the regulatory authorities (FDA, EMA, PMDA) for the approval. Since 2017, she provides medical input to help drive the strategy, design, and execution of Novan’s development programs as the Vice President in Medical. In 2019, she founded the Institute of Drug Development Career Promotion as a nonprofit organization in order to promote career development in the drug development arena for young physicians and scientists.

若手研究者向け移転可能研究力強化セミナー ～製薬業界における医薬品開発：キャリアパス、現況と将来の方向性～

若手研究者(DC, PD)向けの移転可能スキルを向上するセミナーです。
セミナーは英語にておこないます。

■概要

製薬業界における医薬品開発はダイナミックに変化しており、ベンチャー企業やスタートアップの企業(アカデミア発のものも含む)がある程度までの成功を収めると、その研究成果を大企業が買収することによって大規模な臨床開発段階に入ることが多い。臨床開発には何兆円もかかることが多く、コスト削減、効率化と早期承認のために各社知恵を絞っている。効率化のために多くの動物実験や薬理試験などは外部委託され、そこにアカデミアとの協力関係も生まれている。各自の専門分野により、製薬企業(スポンサー)と受託研究機関（CRO）でのキャリアは流動的である。自分の強みを発揮できる分野を見極めるため、製薬企業のマトリックスチーム構造、各ファンクションの役割を理解しておくことは今後のキャリアプランニングのために重要である。

中鉢　知子　氏　一般社団法人医薬品開発能力促進機構　チーフメンター・Novanメディカル統括部長

1991年大阪大学医学部卒業。

1996年同大学院修了。ボストン大学およびカナダアルバータ大学にてポスドク。大阪大学医学部皮膚科、大阪厚生年金病院皮膚科にて皮膚科臨床に携わる。

1998年皮膚科専門医取得。

2002年、ファイザー日本法人にてジャパンディベロップメントチームリーダー。骨粗しょう症治療薬、高血圧、高脂血症薬などの新薬開発、当局対応に携わる。

2006年、ファイザー米国法人に転籍。眼科領域および尋常性乾癬のグローバル開発を指揮。その後、イーライリリー社にてシニアメディカルアドバイザー、グラクソスミスクラインにてシニアメディカルディレクター。各種皮膚科疾患のグローバル臨床開発計画立案、施行、FDA(アメリカ), EMA(ヨーロッパ), PMDA(日本)当局対応・交渉に携わる。

2017年よりNovan, Incヴァイスプレジデント(メディカル)。

 

2019年、医薬品開発啓もう活動の一環として非営利一般社団法人医薬品開発能力促進機構を設立。ノースカロライナ州ダーラム市在住。
